This is a teaser for a small experiment I did. I shot a concert/stage performance of the Dutch band Intwine tonight, and I figured I'd bring both my D90 and D2H.

Truth is I'm kind of wasted right now (nice afterparty), but I think the shots turned out well, especially when you consider the D2H is almost 8 years old.

If I do njot update this thread in...48 hours....I probably just forgot. Or the shots sucked and I'm ashamed. Either way, it will be/was(?) a fun experiment.

'Night!

UPDATE:

Here's my shots from the night. I worked with 2 bodies (D2H and D90), and coincidently, I picked the 3 best shots from both cameras. I wonder if you guys can pick out the poor noisy low-res D2H shots from the valhalla 12 MP uber-noiseless D90. 8)

Allow me to explain: this is mostly a torture test for the D2H. Many people reckon that, because noise performance has improved so much in 8 years, you can't squeeze good pictures out of it. I'm here to disprove that, and perhaps even print one full size to see what happens. 8)

Stage performances just are the ultimate torture test for a DSLR I think. The artists are very dynamic, so AF has to keep up quite a lot, and then there's the lighting. It's constantly changing, covers a very broad dynamic range and...there's not a lot of it. And by not a lot I mean ISO 1600 at F/1.4 for 1/80th

There was another photographer at the venue by the way, she had a D300 and did not want to go above 1600 ISO. And there I stood with my D2H at 1600, blasting away. She was also quite fond of her omnibounce, despite that we were in a completely black venue. That sort of intrigued me, but it made her happy so...

I still dont know what noise on a photo means: Is it the sensor or the noise reduction in the camera?
But while I shot a few days with the Nikon D100 @ 800 and 1600 ISO I felt almost on the ground: More noise than my compactcamera!
So it should be the sensor which has become better, right?

BTW, I need an explanation about the 5D vs Mamiya, Mark!
I dont understand that, er, well.

The noise comes from the image sensor and may or may not undergo noise reducing treatment inside the camera.

Digital noise: Multicolored grain.

Typical digital noise reduction.

You are comparing two different beasts. Saying one is far better in general is quite naive.

Is your Mamiya better at taking video than your 5D?

Agun,

You are starting to fall back into the habit of making "smart-arse" comments in this and other threads to compensate for your inability to contribute here as an active photographer. Please rethink your attitude - just a little common sense would tell you that if Mark actively uses both a Mamiya and a 5D then he doesn't need your cheek.

Bob.

I would expect you to say that because you have a grudge against me. There have been many "smart-arse" comments on this forum that haven't been posted by me yet you pick on me, like you always do.

If Mark can say his Mamiya is a "far better camera" than a 5D I'm obviously going to think it's a rather naive statement because he is saying his 5D is far inferior in every way, as he didn't say what his Mamiya was far better at.

And Bob, Why do you say I can't contribute as an active photographer? Are you saying that, because I don't currently own a DSLR, I am an idiot and my opinion is worthless? Isn't that a "smat-arse" comment?

So basically If I try to prove someone with a superior camera than mine to be wrong on one of his comments it's a "smart-arsed" comment but if he does the same to me it's not.

Come on Bob...

Nice pictures! ^^

Well, the noise pattern is rather indistinguishable, so it will only be guess work for my part. It's fun to guess though, so lets make a fool out of myself! :D

1. D2H
2. D90
3. D90
4. D2H
5. D2H
6. D90
